I PURITANI
Tiroler Festspiele, Erl

"The excellent orchestra of the Tiroler Festspiele Erl, under the extremely dynamic and sensitive musical direction of Lorenzo Passerini, presented a delicately elaborated Bellini and accompanied the phenomenal singers in an incredibly attentive and sensitive manner."

"Leading the Tyrolean Festival Orchestra in Erl, Lorenzo Passerini conducts the ensemble with sovereignty - with sometimes slightly exaggerated markings - and injects a great deal of spirit into this demanding score. He also shows great attention to the singers, and is ready to accompany them by giving them all the space they need."

"Lorenzo Passerini gives a beautiful reading of the score, making some timely cuts. He obtains mellow and dramatic sonorities, then bends the orchestra to a romantic lyricism or to the light, agogic sonority of Bellini's melodies. A great night for him."

"Conductor Lorenzo Passerini not only demonstrated a sure control, but also pushed the singers, orchestra and choir to the peak of their performance."

"This evening was a true highlight of bel canto, both in the interplay between all the ensembles and in the conducting, which emphasises the atmospheric and dramatic power of the work. That Lorenzo Passerini loves theatre is demonstrated not only by the generous use of the organ, bells, harps and choirs behind the stage, but also by the wind and thunder machine on stage. In addition, the young Italian conductor turns up the volume, but also carves sharp contrasts between light and dark, and sharpens phrases to the point of exaltation, with the orchestra and festival choir following him with remarkable flexibility. Passerini's indefatigable physical commitment is certainly not 'maestro di cappella', but he pulls everyone along with him in his determination to lash out at the music to the max. In this way, he not only ensures that Bellini's last opera is stripped of all its frivolity, in the banal sense of 'bel canto', and acquires a deadly seriousness, but also that it becomes an evening for which many would travel back to the Tyrol. This was demonstrated by the orgies of applause during the performance and the standing ovation at the end."

"Under the musical direction of Lorenzo Passerini, the orchestra of the Tiroler Festspiele Erl proves to be a predestined ensemble for Bellini's masterpiece. Passerini not only conducts with every fibre of his body, but also puts the orchestra in the spotlight. Initially one wonders why there is a lone drum on the left side of the orchestra, separated from the rest of the percussion. The answer is given when the percussionist changes sides to create it filling the whole scene. The harp, which in the first act is still integrated into the orchestra, plays offstage after the interval to make Elvira's singing more ecstatic. The result is that the audience is swept from one wave of enthusiasm to the next and leaves the auditorium full of energy after almost three and a half hours of beautiful singing."
